A Culture of Giving

By Mitch Smith

In December, we enjoy reflecting as a firm on the moments throughout the year when our teams around the globe have shared their time and talents in the community.

During the holiday season, we have the opportunity to focus on giving and service to others in our communities. With messages of hate and acts of violence that permeate our everyday lives, it’s important to reflect and remember that people are still doing good deeds in the world.

In December, we enjoy reflecting as a firm on the moments throughout the year when our teams around the globe have shared their time and talents in the community.

IIDA | Mary’s Place

During 2017, Associate Elizabeth Mahan served as the chair of external outreach for the IIDA Northern Pacific chapter. While serving in this role, she worked with Mary’s Place – a Seattle-based organization providing housing, employment and wellness resources for families facing homelessness – to renovate a women-only facility from a cold sterile space into a warm sanctuary environment.

JDRF

Seattle’s top architecture firms and Sheraton Seattle’s culinary teams came together to rediscover the city’s historic past and imagine the future, including the waterfront, for the 25th anniversary of the JDRF Gingerbread Village. MG2 has participated in this tradition for more than 15 years and this year the team designed a wonderful installation with our elf, Alexa, featuring an underwater, future Seattle. Many thanks to Ann Tseng for leading the charge this year and to her team for keeping this fun tradition alive!

Haiti

In 2016, Tony McCloud shared his story of working on rebuilding Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. He worked with the Haiti Outreach Ministries to build a school for the children of Port-au-Prince. We’re happy to update the school is nearing completion!

Dragon Boat Festival

The Duanwu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday near the summer solstice. MG2 Shanghai staff used the annual celebration to connect with senior figures in their community by volunteering at the Huangpu Elderly Care Center. For several hours, the team wrapped steamed rice dumplings alongside members of the retired living facility.

Day of Giving

In year two of the firm’s Day of Giving, we ventured out into our communities again to provide support to a variety of organizations including Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center, Urban Artworks, Ronald McDonald House and Bread for the City.

Susan G. Komen Swing for the Cure

This summer, we celebrated 15 years of our Swing for the Cure golf tournament benefiting Susan G. Komen. Over the years, we have raised more than $1 million dollars with the funds going toward mammogram screenings, breast health education and outreach and treatment support for underserved woman.

NAIOP Community Enhancement Day

Nearly 500 volunteers – including several MG2 employees – showed up bright and early to make a difference for Farmer Frog, a sustainable, educational farm in Woodinville, WA. The group spent the day completing more than $300,000 worth of improvements for Farmer Frog. Many thanks to Principal Elik Grin for leading the charge!
