MG2 created a corporate campus for Costco Wholesale that continues to develop in line with the company’s success.
Costco Wholesale’s headquarters are part of a 30-acre mixed-use development that includes a warehouse, as well as multiple other retail and office buildings. As Costco has grown over the years, MG2 has helped expand the corporate campus to meet the company’s operational needs, including designing a 180,000 SF office building in 2001 that includes a two-story lobby, a three-story atrium in the cafeteria and a skybridge.
In 2013, Costco began negotiating with Issaquah city officials to add to its headquarters through a new development agreement. MG2 worked closely with Costco throughout the complex process to help its leadership team develop a 30-year agreement with the city that supports the campus expansion and provides new opportunities for city development and infrastructure enhancements.
MG2 is currently designing a new nine-story office building that connects via a skybridge to a new 10-story parking garage. The two new additions incorporate visual transitions and similar colors, materials and forms as the existing campus buildings, while taking advantage of modern sustainable practices and materials. Energy efficiency and sustainability are a priority for MG2, Costco and the city so envelope materials and systems were selected both for aesthetic appeal and technical performance. Another important consideration when designing the new buildings was to create a graceful transition between the physical and natural environment. Costco’s campus sits within the city’s newly-defined urban core and is adjacent to Issaquah Creek and the Pickering Trail at the campus’ eastern edge. A critical aspect of the design process with the city was to preserve pedestrian connectivity as a community amenity.
